TALK

Preparing Our Teens for the Unspoken at University

Format: 50 minute talk, 10 minute Q&A.
Talks can be delivered in person or virtually with the option of an interactive online tool (Mentimeter) to engage pupils further with the issues.

Outcome: Prepare students for leaving school and enable them to tackle the cultures of gender-based violence which they might encounter at university.

Universities across the UK are facing an epidemic of harassment, sexual assault and gendered violence. This session provides pupils with essential learning in preparation for leaving school and is supported and informed by our campaign: Educate Against Rape. Weaving storytelling with statistics, this talk enables pupils to see the root causes of the culture which allows gender-based violence to take place in university settings.

  • Consent: a discussion about the 'grey areas' of consent and what the chasm between definitions of consent and the lived experiences of consent can look like as students.

  • Sexual Harassment and Assault: common ways harassment and assault manifest themselves at university.

  • Cultures of Gendered Violence: discourses, actions and aspects of university life that feed a specific culture that leads to sexual harassment and violence.

TALK

Misogyny, Language & Violence: Making the Connections

Format: 50 minute talk, 10 minute Q&A.
Talks can be delivered in person or virtually with the option of an interactive online tool (Mentimeter) to engage pupils further with the issues.

Outcome: Explore the connection between gendered and misogynistic language with gender inequality and consider the potentially violent outcomes of seemingly harmless 'banter'.

This talk shows the power of language by exploring the linguistic links between sex and violence, reflecting on where we hear misogynistic language glorified in the world around us, and by examining case studies to look at the implications of allowing harmful language to go unchecked.

All of our talks can be followed up with our sixth form workshop

Workshops

Format: 2 hours
Up to 35 pupils per workshop

Through highly interactive group work, discussions and further teaching, pupils will explore gender inequality and have critical conversations about specific topics, building on the knowledge they gained in our Sixth Form talks.

Content:

  • In groups pupils will build a 'pyramid' of gender inequality - mapping how different forms of gender inequality (such as gender stereotypes, language, attitudes towards women and girls) are related to each other and can lead to gender-based violence.

  • They will develop an understanding of how these issues are connected.

  • The latter part of the workshop will focus on how we can start to disrupt and challenge these behaviours and attitudes as individuals and as a school community.

I’d just like to say how brilliant the Bold Voices event was yesterday; it was without a doubt one of the best workshops I’ve been to at school. I could not recommend it more highly for anyone here. I know that many others feel the same way.
